Last week in a brainstorming session, we tossed around the idea of what would happen to the cell phone network once WI-Max arrived and all cell devices would be switched over to VOIP on the WI-Max network. Essentially, all cell phone companies would need to get quickly into this technology. And then one of the group mentioned that satellite feeds were already making their way to broadband and that it wouldn’t be long before everyone had access to satellite TV on their PC. And why would you want that?
As millions know, satellite TV is a subscription based product that you must pay for every month. If you add another room in your house, you pay for another receiver or feed. What most don’t know is that there is satellite TV available for the PC as well and there is no monthly fee built-in. The way this business model is monetized is through the sale of the aggregator software that you install on your PC. No extra equipment – just a broadband connection and you’re all set to watch some 2000 channels of video from around the globe. Thousand have already jumped on board, but is it legal?
One of the systems we put to the test is the Satellite TV for PC 2008 Elite Edition. They claim 3000 channels, but not all are broadcasting at the same time so it was a little hit or miss. There are thousands of great channels and you may find some local networks with shows you normally watch on your TV. The system is not hacked or illegal – and there is a support team that can help you if you ever have a challenge with the software. We found that it downloaded quickly and was easy to install. There was no extra hardware to purchase as the player uses your computer speakers and screen.
One great feature, as reviewed on a Satellite TV software site is that you can take the program wherever you go. Installed on a notebook computer and wherever you travel, you’ll have your satellite channels. And if you enjoy foreign programming you’re in for a treat. There are over 78 countries represented with dozens of channels from world famous networks. You can even watch these as you travel overseas, provided you have a high speed connection. The Elite Edition has more channels than its predecessor and has an improved interface.
Once you pay for the software, you’re done. That covers the life of the software and no additional payments are required. In fact we thought it was interesting that they didn’t have a download fee for the software. Even though there are hundreds of news and variety programs, you will find a great deal of sports channels and will be delighted with the line-up. Especially with the Olympics – you will be able to see the coverage from other nations involved.
One thing you must remember before purchasing is to make sure you can get a money-back guarantee and we were pleased to find that the Satellite TV for PC 2008 Elite Edition had just that – 90 days, no questions asked. And that’s pretty good.
Most legit programs offer a money-back guarantee. With that in mind, I’ve checked out many of the current Satellite TV for PC programs and offer my opinion on the top three. Discover what I found by visiting my website.

Choosing your paragliding helmet is worth spending some time over. After all, it’s pretty important to protect your head! There’s a bit more to it than choosing a color, popping it on for a couple of seconds and then plunking down your cash.
Just like other flying accessories these days, a paragliding helmet is likely to be designed specifically as an air sports helmet. There is quite some variety, mainly from European companies since the sport has been going strong there for a couple of decades.
Helmet Construction
A few words about the construction of paragliding helmets. They have some interesting features actually, when compared to other types of helmets. First the basics. An aviation helmet, like most other types, has a twin shell construction.
A hard outer shell resists penetration if your head bangs against something sharp. And a crushable inner shell absorbs energy which helps to prevent or reduce injuries in a collision.
The outer shell is usually made from thermoplastic or a composite fibre material. Kevlar is often used, and in the pricier models carbon fibre helps to keep weight down.
The inner shell is usually expanded polystyrene. It has great energy absorbing properties, but this also means it is easily damaged by quite minor bumps. If you find the inner shell looks deformed or dented, the helmet is not nearly as safe as it used to be, and should not be used.
It’s really a personal choice as to how well you protect your lower face. For the best protection, a full face helmet is the way to go. Since they use more material in manufacturing, they cost quite a bit more. The other type is called an open face helmet, since it has nothing covering your mouth and chin.
A good paragliding helmet should not restrict your vision too much. Hence, some manufacturers advertise that their helmet has wide vision or some similar term. They have taken the trouble to design-in a generous field of view, without affecting the helmet’s safety.
Something quite new is ear-cutouts which don’t disturb the airflow around the helmet. Some designs achieve this with mesh material that sits flush with the surface of the helmet. This gets rid of ‘wind whistle’, making it easier for the pilot to judge airspeed by the sound of the airflow.
Anybody who wants to make high-quality helmets these days can’t ignore the latest standards set down for sports aviation helmets. A European standard, CEN EN966, is often quoted. This standard has tests for absorbing shock, resisting penetration, and also specifies levels of visibility and head mobility.
The Right Helmet?
A paragliding helmet should fit snugly. It should not slip around your head easily. But at the same time, you should not be able to feel continuous pressure. Here’s a tip. Leaning your head forward, grab the rear edge of the helmet and try to pull it off. If you manage to slip the helmet off, it is not suitable for the shape of your head. Keep looking!
Helmets come in quite a range of colors, across all the manufacturers. Many are just shades of gray or silver, and some of the more spectacular colors actually cost a bit more. Incidentally, the cheapest helmets from any particular manufacturer are often offered in just the White color.
A visor is a see-through plate of thermoplastic material attached to the helmet that can be pulled down to protect your eyes. If your visor eventually gets a lot of small surface scratches, it should be replaced.
An issue for some people is whether they can add a headset inside the helmet. Some helmets are designed for it, some aren’t.
Finally…
In common with many other pieces of safety equipment, it is not recommended to get a used paragliding helmet. You just don’t know what it has been subjected to. Also, it’s a good idea to replace your paragliding helmet after 5 years of normal use.

Online photo sharing sites offer a great way for people to share their memories with family and friends, and even complete strangers. Unfortunately, not everyone understands how to really make his or her photo collections meaningful. They just throw together a bunch of semi-random pictures in a folder and call it a day. It’s really a wasted opportunity – you can really take your online photo album to another level with a little extra effort.
You should strive to make your photo albums tell a story that anyone, even people who don’t know you, can understand. Most online photo sharing websites provide all the tools you need to make sure that you photo album tells an interesting story. It doesn’t take much work, and it’ll greatly enhance the experience for people who are viewing your photos.
You should try and share things that you yourself are passionate about. If you’re not really interested in what you’re taking pictures of, why should your audience? If you have a hobby that you particularly enjoy and are proud of, you should share that through your photos. This is especially true for crafting projects. Be sure to take pictures of the work-in-progress through its various stages, as well as a picture of yourself with the finished project. You can add comments to each photo explaining how the process works, so viewers of the album will learn something about the craft and about you while they view your photos.
Creating a “photo documentary” of your life is another great way to engage viewers of your photos. You can share an important week in your life, perhaps your training prior to running a marathon all the way through the marathon itself. You can capture your family vacation and share it with the world, day by day. This creates a great way for new acquaintances to really get to know you and for old friends and distant relations to catch up with your life in an instant.
You should also take some time to convert your old photos to a digital format in order to share them. It’s not just the recent events in your life that are important to share. You may be able to dig up some old family photos and share with everyone the history of your family. It’s a great way to reminisce about days past with your loved ones.
Remember that the important moments in life aren’t always around the holidays. Many people tend to let their cameras sit and collect dust when there isn’t some sort of holiday celebration going on. You should always keep your camera close at hand ready to capture those special moments in life – they could happen at any time.
You should never neglect to add comments to all of your photos. Let the people viewing your pictures know what’s going on in the picture. Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but adding a few extra words can really flesh out what’s going on in your pictures.
MJ Johnston writes for a variety of websites, including Digitalphotoalbumsite.com, a photo site that offers advice on the quickest and easiest way to build a digital photo album, as well as free online photo storage.

A healthy, happy pet is the pleasure and pride of any dog owner.
Whippets are, despite their fragile appearance, very strong and healthy dogs and the best way to maintain your whippet healthy and good looking is a sensible diet.
Unfortunately what makes an appropriate diet in a whippet view and in yours is probably not the same.
Most Nutritious Dog Food According to your Whippet
Unattended human food
Is the most sought after food in whippet world. Whippets show a diabolical ability in reading your mind and body language to catch the occasional moment of distraction. This whippet trait will teach you very effectively not to leave food around and will make of you a better housekeeper.
Garbage
The inebriating smell of trash has earned whippets the name of garbage hounds. Again, this will improve your domestic abilities.
Chocolate
Chocolate is poisonous for dogs. Recently it has been used to sweetly exterminate coyotes. Be egoistic, keep all your chocolate for yourself.
Brittle bones
Resist those doe eyes. Cooked bones are brittle and can cause choking, intestinal blockage and pierced intestinal walls.
Most Nutritious Dog Food According to the Virtuous Whippet Owner
Best dry dog food
In the past the only option was making your own dog food at home. Dog diet was an easy resolved matter, it consisted of cooked meat scraps and rice plus some occasional left over.
The dogs enjoyed the food variety and a reasonable good health but this regimen involved a good deal of extra cooking, storing, shopping and general laboring. I must admit I welcomed the advent of dry dog food with immense gratitude.
For convenience I never gave my whippets any other option but the dry dog food and some occasional table scrap added for variety.
My whippets always did very well on this diet as long as I stuck to the best dry dog foods. Whenever I strayed from the premium brands I was punished with skin problems and consequent unwelcome vet bills.
I found out at my expense that veterinary bills can exceed what you might save on less nutritious dog food.
Even dry food loses nutrients in time and the fats can degrade and become rancid. Check the expiration date and store the food in a dry, cool place.
Occasional selected table scraps
Who can resist those imploring eyes?
For variety you can add some table scraps to your pet food when appropriate leftovers like meat, chicken, eggs or rice are available.
To discourage begging, always serve the table scraps in your dog bowl.
Homemade dog food
The debate between the proponents of home made dog food and those who prefer commercial feeds is still open.
On one hand commercial diets have been tested on entire generation of dogs, their components provide optimal nutrition and the best dry dog foods contain human-quality ingredients.
On another hand these foods are highly processed and are very unlike a dog’s natural diet.
Raw food diet
Proponent of dog raw food diet, feed their dogs whole raw animal carcasses pointing out that this diet is closer to the natural diet of wild animals and claiming good results for the health of their pets and savings on food bills.
The author, a biologist and lifelong dog enthusiast, ten years ago fell incurably in love with whippets, a beautiful, fun and easy care dog breed.

Capital is the foundation of every business. The business owner needs to have enough funds to run his business smoothly. And, as we know, business does not always mean earning profits – you may have losses as well. In a not always predictable market, doing business necessitates the requirement of immediate cash. Commercial secured business loans have been designed to help you out in these circumstances.
Commercial secured business loans are tailored specifically for entrepreneurs who require funds for starting/acquiring a business or expanding an existing one. The amount drawn from commercial secured business loans can be used for a variety of purposes, such as purchasing machinery, renovating buildings and offices, purchasing commercial buildings and much more.
One important feature of secured commercial business loans is that these business loans can be collateralized by commercial property, equipment, accounts receivables, purchase orders, contracts, company shares, other unrelated properties, etc.
Commercial real estate lenders wish to see a business plan which shows a strong source of repayment for the loan. The lender wants to make sure that his business loan is going to get repaid.
There are a number of questions that the lender will have in order to see if you qualify for a business/construction loan or financing:
- Will the finished project be worth more than it costs to construct/finance?
- After the project is finished, will the loan to value be, for example, 75% or less?
- How much will the borrower be willing to invest in the construction/business loan?
- How does the borrower’s net worth compare to the size of the construction/business loan?
- Will the lender be able to get out of the deal at some point by the borrower qualifying for a new loan to pay out his construction/business loan (takeout loan)?
As far as business start up loans, lenders are concerned with such things as: the borrower’s experience in the line of business (increases the borrower’s chances of success), the amount the borrower is willing to invest himself (how much the borrower will have at stake in the deal), collateral sufficient for the loan portion of the deal. Business start up loans can be used for: construction financing, renovations to existing premises, machinery and equipment, marketing, and working capital, or acquisition of a business.

Reuters published an article last week on the “evils” of brokered deposits. And now my gloves are off!
Let’s get something straight. Deposits, brokered or otherwise are not the problem. The banks making poor management decisions are the problem. The problem is with the bank’s bad loans and poor investment decisions. It is not the accepting of brokered deposits that causes banks to fail.
The perceived problem with brokered deposits is that they are more volatile than a bank’s “core” deposits. This may have been true in the Stone Age when we didn’t have newspapers and the internet, but it simply IS NOT TRUE in 2008. In a matter of hours, a bank through the internet can take in Millions of dollars. Just look at the recent onslaught of funds that AARP helped Huntington National Bank raise or how about Countrywide Bank? Those internet funds are as volatile (and “expensive” I might add) as any brokered deposit.
There is also another class of deposits that most people outside of the banking industry probably don’t even know about. They arrive from a rate listing service. Rate listing services actually have a specific exemption from being considered deposit brokers because they don’t “facilitate” the placement of the deposit. They just provide rates and the investment manager makes the decision as to which institution to place the deposit. (Don’t even get me started on this one). Again, a bank can list CD rates on these services and within hours raise Millions of dollars. Millions of dollars that are just as volatile as any brokered deposit.
The article written by John Poirier also uses scare tactics and a nice salting of misinformation to give the impression that brokered deposits are evil. Almost every paragraph could be rebutted. But then this post would be 10 pages long.
First, the article leads off with a statement about “cash hungry banks are in danger of failing” because of brokered deposits. The fact is that the banks are cash hungry because they made risky loans that aren’t being paid back. Secondly, they are cash hungry because they are losing “core” deposits to high yield savings accounts and checking accounts that are being offered on the internet.
Next the article states that brokered deposits have “fueled a spate of recent bank failures.” First, there have only been four failures this year. I wouldn’t classify that as a spate. Second, of the four banks, only ANB had a large amount of brokered deposits. Douglas NB had about 3.2% of their deposits listed as brokered and First Integrity had about 4%. Banks that do take brokered deposits usually limit them to no more than 10%.
One of the funnier misstatements is the fact that the author writes, “Brokered deposits are short-term deposits that often attract banks in remote areas to increase lending activity.” First, brokered deposits can be far from short-term. They can be anywhere from 90-Days out to 20-years. The term is really dependent on the market. Secondly, the article implies that it was the lure of brokered deposits that caused them to increase risky lending activity. However, usually the bank has already begun the lending activity and suddenly realizes they need more deposits to fund the loans. The increased risk the bank was willing to take (at least during the Housing bubble) was fueled by greed and the low cost of funds, not brokered deposits.
One of the few partially true statements is “Brokered deposits also usually offer higher rates than other bank products such as certificates of deposits…” The true part is often the rates are higher. However, as I stated above, they may be no higher than many internet specials. This author shows just how little time he took with his research. 99% of brokered deposits are certificates of deposits.
Are brokered deposits really more expensive though? If a bank that has $1 Billion deposits needs $5 Million dollars they can make a private offering to brokers without alerting their entire deposit base of these higher rates. So would you rather pay a higher rate on $5MM or $1BB? Moreover, brokered deposits tend to be in higher denominations which means much, much less paperwork and handling for the bank. They also tend to be from other financial institutions. This means the patriot act doesn’t apply and the bank doesn’t have to worry about OFAC violations. In the long run, brokered deposits cost the bank less. Finally, although a single deposit may be more volatile, the broker is usually able to replace any deposits that close and thus, brokered deposits become a stable funding source. They are certainly more stable than high-yielding savings accounts being offered across the internet that can be withdrawn at anytime.
The author goes on to infer that ANB was a small Arkansas bank. He makes it seem like the evil brokers took advantage of a small little bank. ANB Financial at the time of closing was over $2BB in assets. Most banks do not have over a billion dollars in assets. ANB was a large bank. The management of this bank did not have the wool pooled over their eyes. The brokers didn’t come to them as wolves in sheep’s clothing.
He states that the FDIC picked up the $214 million tab when ANB was taken over. Pulaski took over a large part of the deposits. As the closure process hasn’t been completed and ANB’s assets sold off, there is no way to know how much it will actually cost. But if you want to talk about cost, how about the Bear Stearns bailout or the billions and billions of dollars the Fed has pumped into the system. How much is that costing and how much of that are the banks using to continue their mismanagement practices.
Deposits from any source other than the local area should have more scrutiny, if any additional scrutiny is going to be placed. If a bank’s insurance premiums are increased for accepting brokered-deposits, the practice of utilizing rate listing services and offering internet specials will increase, thus skirting the intent of the original regulations (which is to make banks keep a watchful eye on their non-core deposits).
If you’ve gotten through all of above, who is really going to pay for higher oversight and or the higher premiums that have been suggested? You the saver. You the saver are the one that will pay with lower rates. You have already been hit hard with the Fed lowering rates over 3%. The FDIC should scrutinize the entire banking operation, including all sources of deposits and lending practices. The fact is in 2008, all deposits are volatile.
One funny side note. I looked at the deposit breakdown on ANB. And I discovered why they failed. As of 3/31, the FDIC reported that they had about $1.8BB in deposits. Of that, about $1.7BB was listed as core and about $1.5BB was listed as brokered. A deposit can’t both be core and brokered. I think ANB failed because they simply couldn’t add 1+1. :O)

It’s science fair time again! That time of the year when students and their parents are faced with the demands of finding and creating a science project. Instead of dreading your science fair, why not make it fun? Finding the right project is the first step!
What do you like: Sports? Music? Good food? All are great ideas for a science fair project. Finding a project in an area that interest you is the key to a successful and fun science fair project!
There are many places to look for science fair projects. Figure out a topic you like and you can probably find a science project about it. For example, do you like baseball? Maybe you like music? How about recent events like tsunamis? These are all great science fair project subjects.
For older students how about a project on the opposite sex. For example, you could do a project on “Who needs more space? Boys or Girls?” Or, “Who has better study habits? Boys or Girls”? These projects will involve observation and carefully constructed questionnaires to gather the data you will need to either prove or disprove your hypothesis.
What ever project you choose, it must conform to the scientific method. You will need a hypothesis, controls, procedures, materials, conclusion, a good display and proof of your original hypothesis. But most important of all, it should about something you like. As this will make all the required steps interesting and fun! Terimore Institute, Inc. has an amazing variety of science fair projects and instructions you can download right now! Step by step guidelines to help you complete a winning science fair project! Each project includes instructions on the scientific method, presentation tips and judging insights.

How many times have you heard a song and was immediately transported to a specific memory? Everything about that memory feels real and present. You remember details, such as how you felt and the people involved. You even remember what it smelled like! It is astounding what memories one song can trigger!
Music has profoundly affected us since the beginning of man. Our brains decide for us what music we respond to most. As we go about our lives we listen to this music and unknowingly place bookmarks on certain songs and the related memories. We may not think some memories are memorable, but years later we hear that song and amazingly every detail comes back.
Unfortunately, we can’t pick and choose the memories to bookmark. Our saddest, most painful memories as well as our greatest memories are tagged and filed away.
Movies tend to bring up deep emotions we’ve gone through and thought were buried and forgotten. That’s why the toughest guy can watch a movie, relate to it in a sad way, and suddenly tear up. (he might claim he’s got something in his eye trying to cover it up!)
I, personally, am a movie buff, but I’m a hard sell. It seems like movies are running out of ideas and are in the ‘re-make’ business. Or, they are filming endless series that should have stopped already! There are very few films that are original and truly entertaining. That’s why when I see a great movie, I rave about it.
“Pan’s Labyrinth” is the most outstanding movie I’ve ever seen. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this is a mind blowing fantasy for adults. It’s the story about Ophelia, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer in Spain during WWII. She creates an eerie, but captivating fantasy world to escape the harsh reality. There are subtitles, but it adds style to the movie. Warning!!! This is an adult fantasy, violence, no nudity. NOT FOR CHILDREN!
Ophelia’s plight touched me on my deepest levels, and she stays in my heart everyday.
I also enjoy a variety of movies from Comedy to Drama. I even enjoy Science Fiction. I especially love Stephen King movies. I’ve been accused of being a little warped, but who isn’t! At least I admit it!
Remember, your brain attracts you to what ever type of movies or music you enjoy . Love what you naturally respond to because you really can’t change it! You’re only lying to yourself! Rock on!

Numerous themes that will help direct future research surfaced in the six literature reviews in this special issue. One theme is the merging of computer mediated communications (CMC) and hypermedia. Students can access Internet-based resources and feed them into hypermedia program shells and make the resources more interactive. An example is the Hamlet project in Reed’s review; students can download a literary work in electronic form and then add navigation buttons, pop-up field buttons, and scanned-picture buttons. The evolving technology is also allowing teachers and students to access hypermedia programs from the Internet-programs written in a variety of languages, including Hot Java, which, in this case, permits students to run programs in real time. While these two aspects of the merger between hypermedia and the Internet are exciting, little research has been conducted and these themes will probably direct much of the computer-based research in the years to come.
An interesting angle to CMC is e-mail messaging effect on student writing. Both Berson and Reed alluded to studies that showed that students improve their writing and better attend to their audience when there is an ongoing written dialogue between writer and reader. Because the framework of learning as a mode of learning crosses all content areas, this may be an important approach for developing a knowledge base in any area, with writing improvement being an important secondary benefit.
Knowledge constructivism is a second theme that can be divided into two categories:
• The use of existing programs that essentially help the users build knowledge structures
• Student creation of programs that reflect what they understand on a given topic (this can be viewed as an alternative format for student work).
The role of learning style is resurfacing in education by way of the realm of hypermedia. When much of the learning-style research first appeared, there was not much teachers could do with such information. Facing 120 or more students a day, the concept of individualizing instruction seldom made it past the stage of mere thought. Much of the hypermedia research involving learning styles is showing that rich hypermedia environments are accommodating various learning styles. Students, regardless of learning style, perform equally well, although they access different types of information as they learn from the program. It is only in the Ayersman hypermedia article that learning style was seriously addressed. It may be that only when programs are detailed and rich can they truly accommodate individual learner differences as an entity. Programs in science, mathematics, social studies, and writing might be labeled more appropriate for a particular group of students by the developer or teacher; hypermedia programs may be the only type that truly accommodates various learning styles.
With the advent of CMC, the possible merging of CMC and hypermedia, the emphasis on knowledge constructivism, the changing role of the teacher from knowledge source to knowledge facilitator, the growing respect for action research, and the ever-evolving technology, there are a multitude of factors to research.

According to the findings of a recent study conducted by the Cancer Research Center of the European Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences in Bologna, Italy, the frequent use of aspartame considerably increases the risks of developing lymphoma cancers and leukemia. Although the long-term study was conducted exclusively on female rats, without involving the active participation of any human subjects, the results are still very conclusive: aspartame is a clear carcinogenic agent that has a major contribution in the occurrence and evolution of lymphoma. A very popular chemical sweetener used as a replacement for sugar-based sweeteners, aspartame is no longer considered to be harmless.
The Italian research team that has conducted the study on the effects of aspartame on long-term use has stated that this chemical sweetener should be completely withdrawn from the market, as it greatly increases the risks of cancerous diseases. In present, aspartame is extensively used worldwide, being a common chemical component of chewing gum, sweet beverages and a wide range of other products.
Another series of studies have confirmed the strong carcinogenic potential of aspartame, revealing the fact that the chemical actually damages DNA, increasing the risks of cancer and degenerative brain diseases on long-term use. According to the findings, this commonly used product facilitates the development of tumors at various levels of the body, being a serious risk factor for brain cancers. The theories on the pronounced carcinogenic potential of aspartame have been recently supported by statistic reports: the incidence of brain tumors among animals exposed to prolonged doses of aspartame has increased over 47 times. The strong carcinogenic character of aspartame is due to the variety of toxins it contains. Medical scientists have stated that aspartame was also known to be a very unsafe chemical in the past; despite this fact, aspartame has been further promoted as harmless for commercial reasons.
The continuously increasing incidence of brain cancers among the global population is also considered to be related with the frequent use of aspartame-based products. Oncologists have stated that nowadays the incidence of brain tumors is considerably higher than it was a few decades ago, before aspartame products became available on the market. Furthermore, the increased frequency of various rare lymphoma subtypes such as reticulum cell sarcoma, microglioma and histiocytic lymphoma in the last few years has also been influenced by the use of aspartame.
Although exposure to aspartame can be considered a serious risk factor of lymphoma and other similar malignant diseases, the exact way aspartame triggers the occurrence of such disorders is still unknown. It is believed that aspartame directly interferes in the genetic structure of the body, causing genetic anomalies that later lead to production of cancerous cells. However, further studies are needed in order to provide cancer specialists with additional data on aspartame and its malignant effects on the human body.
